5 Ways to Keep Your Dog Mobile!

You love your furry friend, so it’s difficult when you notice your pet struggling to play, run or move the way you are used to seeing. It’s their natural instinct to get up and get moving! Limited mobility and lack of flexibility can be related to a variety of factors, such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, not getting enough daily exercise, health conditions related to the breed or just simply the natural aging process.

The great news is, we have some paw-some suggestions that will help you manage your dog’s mobility to help them stay flexible and active!

That said, here are five ways you can help your dog maintain their mobility!

1. Keep Weight Management in Mind

Obesity in pets is a complicated issue that’s influenced by many factors like environment, lifestyle and genetics. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, in the United States it’s estimated that 54% of pets are overweight or obese. Why is this information important? Generally speaking, the more overweight your dog is, the harder they must work to carry around those extra pounds, and over time this can cause stress on the body in many ways. Unfortunately, an overweight dog is more at risk at causing excess stress on joints and inflammation.

But the first step is to determine if your pet is overweight. This is most successfully accomplished by an evaluation by your vet. Your vet will determine the healthiest weight for your dog breed! Another option is to use diagrams to judge for yourself. Here is a guide that can be downloaded or printed from The World Small Animal Veterinary Association it includes detailed pictures and descriptions for you to reference. But we highly recommend a visit to your vet of course.

That said, maintaining an appropriate weight for your dog’s breed is essential in lessening their mobility problems by easing strain on hips and joints; and will ultimately lead to a more comfortable and improved quality of life for your furry friend!

What do dogs love more than their pet owners? Treats! Try a treat or supplement that is formulated to specifically support joint health. This will help them live a happier pain-free life! Treats are popular and easy because there is no prescription necessary and serve as a tasty treat for your dog! But as always, remember to do your research on natural ingredients and consult with your vet if your pet has any severe dietary considerations.

There are specific key anti-inflammatory ingredients to look for when researching formulated treats that works to promote joint health. The most proven ingredients to look for include curcumin, glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM. An especially powerful ingredient to always consider is, curcumin: A proven antioxidant powerhouse naturally derived from 100% natural turmeric root.

· Curcumin: Both an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory, great alternative to NSAID treatments; one of the most important ingredients to look for!

· Glucosamine: Reduces cartilage degradation and protects bones from rubbing against each other.

· Chondroitin: Helps provide fluid to joints and to rebuild cartilage.

· MSM: Short for Methylsulfonylmethane, and organic form of sulfur that helps relieve muscle and joint pain and maintains the immunity system/

Providing your dog a daily tasty chew that includes a combination of the aforementioned ingredients is great for preventative hip and joint health support. Give your pooch the extra support they need to stay strong and active!

3. Exercise Is Extra Important

Get moving! As a loving pet parent, you want to spend meaningful time with your pet, what better way to do that than with exercise! Once you get your dog at healthy weight, a great way to help keep their weight under control is to incorporate some daily activity. The right types of exercise are highly effective in strengthening the muscles around the joint, and the more dexterity the joints have, the better the circulation is and the lesser the inflammation will be.
– But only the right kind of exercise needs to be considered. Here’s a few things to keep in mind:

Start with a warmup. Many dogs who suffer from arthritis or hip/joint discomfort experience stiffness in the morning. Allow impact warm up improves overall mobility.

· Swimming is a great alternative to walking. This allows them to keep joints moving without worrying about painful impact on joints.

· Keep terrain in mind, try to avoid difficult surfaces like bumpy, sharp or slippery grounds. These paths could be uncomfortable for them. Grass is always good!

· Try to walk as the same pace as your dog, as this is likely the most comfortable pace they are being mobile. Do not force a quicker pace or excessive running, this could cause strain and discomfort. Adrenaline from over exertion could also mask pain.

The timing of day will help facilitate exercise for your pooch, especially if your dog is at a senior age. For example, an aging dog may find it difficult to exercise first thing in the morning due to stiffness in their joints. But encouraging physical activity midday could be more comfortable for them and help solidify daily activity.

Weather is also an important factor when introducing the right kind of exercise routine. For the same reason as considering the timing of day, physical activity in unsuitable weather is discouraged for your dog. Cold weather may cause severe pain in your dog’s joints, resulting in stiffness and unwillingness to exercise.

In your efforts to help your dog acclimate to an exercise routine, always check on them and look for any signs of discomfort or strained behavior. For example, if you notice your dog struggling or limping when walking, give them a break but always remain active even if it is just a little bit of effort each day.

4. Massages for Mobility

Massages have been known to have incredible benefits for humans and our furry companions can see similar benefits as well. For dogs, massage can help reduce anxiety and stress, who doesn’t want a happy and relaxed pet? Massage can improve bodily functions by increasing circulation and lymphatic flow. It also eases pain from sore and stiff joint/muscles. Giving your pet massages will also help you identify specific areas on their body where they are experiencing discomfort which you can consult with your vet to do a further diagnosis of. All the benefits of massage help to promote mobility and flexibility! But always remember to be gentle when directly massaging and don’t hesitate to ask your vet about proper technique on how to massage your dog.

5. Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Chronic Inflammation in dogs, when left untreated may result in cell damage and oxidative stress. However, what you feed your dog and the quality of food can have an impact on reducing inflammation as well as help your dog live a long and happy life! It’s no secret that changes in what you choose to eat improves wellbeing in many ways over time, it’s no different for your furry friend. With that in mind, here are a few ingredients that help keep your dog strong and mobile and offer numerous health benefits.

Turmeric: An ancient spice used for medicinal purposes for centuries. Its main active ingredient is curcumin, which is a very powerful anti-inflammatory that has beneficial effects on helping treat painful symptoms of arthritis in dogs as well as reduce inflammation in the joints. Potent in antioxidants, known to fight disease! There are several ways to feed this to your dog; powder mixed into a paste, liquid drops mixed with their daily food or in the form of a supplemental pill or soft chew treat.

This extraordinary complex makes curcumin more soluble, stable, and absorbable, thereby making it stay longer in the body, so that the body can benefit from it completely. This novel complex helps support immunity and normalize oxidative stress, which is caused by an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body. It is responsible for causing several health issues in animals. Curcuminoids can help in normalizing oxidative stress, support cellular health and the immune system.

. Essential Fatty Acids: Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids have been known to possess the ability to reduce inflammation and help alleviate discomfort from hip and joint stress. Will also help keep your dog’s coat shiny!

· Ginger: A natural anti-inflammatory that can help ease symptoms related to hip and joint and high in antioxidants.

There are so many ingredients that can improve your dog’s immune system and result in better mobility and flexibility, but most importantly always strive to prepare your beloved pet’s food with minimally processed ingredients and high-quality fresh foods. A healthy balanced diet will help your dog feel more energetic and keep them moving!
